Costa Mesa Car Accident
A pedestrian was killed by a truck that sheared a traffic light post before overturning and becoming engulfed in flames, late Tuesday night. The fiery crash was reported at the intersection Victoria Street and Placentia Avenue around 11:26 PM. When crews arrived on scene they located two victims along with a truck with major damage engulfed in flames.
The driver of the truck, later identified as 65-year-old Jon Scott Weir, of Garden Grove, was apparently pulled from the crash to the front of a nearby 7-Eleven. Firefighter paramedics treated the driver before rushing Weir to an area hospital with life-threatening-injuries. Initial reports from witnesses indicate the truck was traveling eastbound on Victoria Street when it collided with a traffic signal pole on the southeast corner of the intersection. The force of the crash sheared the traffic signal pole from the ground causing it to collapse into lanes of traffic. After the initial impact the truck continued on before overturning and ultimately becoming engulfed in flames. At some point during the ordeal a pedestrian standing on the corner of the intersection was struck and killed. Police later arrested Weir on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. All lanes of Victoria Street are closed between Placentia and Pomona avenues while authorities investigated the fatal crash.
One of the two victims, a pedestrian, was being administered CPR by a nurse that had stopped to assist at the scene. Unfortunately, authorities pronounced the pedestrian, later identified as 39-year-old Juan Urbano-Miguel, of Costa Mesa, deceased on scene.
